Update: Showzey & Facebook working

Thursday, 8th July 2010  12:00pm PDT

Some users were reporting that login via Facebook Connect and cataloging Facebook photos were not working. The error started happening at Wedensday 7th July around 1:00am PDT.

The problem was caused by Facebook: the Facebook API server started behaving a little different and that caused problem with Showzey not to be able to connect to Facebook.

The problem is fixed as of Wednesday 7th July 13:00pm PDT.

We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties using Showzey.

How to download all photos attachments to your computer?

How to download all photo attachments to your computer in one shot?

You can do that by creating Showzey RSS feed then use DownloadThemAll! Firefox plugin to download photos.

Here is the list of steps:

  1. Install firefox plug from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201.This will require you to restart Firefox.

  2. Go to http://www.showzey.com and login

  3. Select My photos on sites -> Showzey (photos from e-mails) in first pull down menu. This will show all photo attachments Showzey extracted from emails.

  4. Click on the RSS feed icon in Showzey. The new Firefox tab will open with all your photos displayed as RSS feed.

  5. By default, Showzey displays 500 most recent photos in RSS feed. To increase the limit, you need to add &limit=number_of_photos to url of the RSS feed. So to get 1000 photos add &limit=1000. The RSS url will look something like this:

    http://www.showzey.com/cpms_photos.rss?user_id=xxxx&secret=xxxxxx&filter=s%3A+showzey&limit=1000

  6. Now, in Firefox, select Tools -> DownloadThemAll! Tools … -> DownloadThemAll. The DownloadThemAll window will open. Select download location for photos and press “Start!” to download them all.

If you think Showzey should have better support for downloading all of the photos in one shot, please vote for this feature at our forum http://showzey.uservoice.com

Bug fixed: Tracking Gmail attachments copied to Flickr/Picasa

For certain accounts (mainly non-US Flickr Yahoo! accounts), the photos uploaded to Flickr or Picasa might not be detected by Showzey as email attachment. The photos are *uploaded* to Flickr or Picasa.

Basically, you might not see them in the email when you open email in Showzey:

We have fixed the problem and deployed the fix.

So photos transferred from Gmail to Picasa/Flickr should be linked to emails - even for yahoo.it domain.

Harvard Business School: Pictures are killer app of all online social networks

Interesting post from Mikolaj Jan Piskorski from Harvard Business School. The following excerpt is very similar to our elevator pitch :):

The biggest discovery: pictures. “People just love to look at pictures,” says Piskorski. “That’s the killer app of all online social networks. Seventy percent of all actions are related to viewing pictures or viewing other people’s profiles.”

True. However, majority posts on Facebook are about FarmVille, PetVille, MafiaWars, spam messages, etc. And on Facebook you can see only photos which are stored on Facebook. What about photos sent via email? What about photos shared via Flickr?

So this is pretty much why we built Showzey.

Workaround for “Unknown Mailbox: [Gmail]/All Mail (Failure)”

Some users are getting “Unknown Mailbox: [Gmail]/All Mail (Failure)” while cataloging their Gmail photos. The error happens because Showzey Gmail integrations supports only the following languages:

Here is the workaround if you use language not supported by Showzey Gmail integration:

1. Enable IMAP Gmail —> Settings —> POP/IMAP —> enable IMAP

2. Change language to English: Gmail —> Settings —> Language —> English

3. Show AllMail folder: Gmail —> Settings —> Labels —> AllMail —> Show
